The Black River & Western Railroad, in conjunction with the Town of Phillipsburg, New Jersey, announced the planned May 2004 startup of a new tourist passenger train between Phillipsburg and Carpentersville, NJ.

The Black River Railroad System acquired a 1930 Brill Model-55 motor car for use on its lines. The vintage 42-seat motor car was purchased from the Edwards Railway Motor Car Company, which will also renovate the car at its Mt. Dora, Florida facility. It is expected to be delivered for service in April 2004.

The Black River Railroad System acquired a tenth diesel locomotive - an EMD SW1200 - formerly  Reading & Northern #1202, built in 1956.

Chris Winther resigned as Asst. Supt. Track, effective March 25th, to pursue a career in the track contracting business. We thank Chris for all his dedication, hard work, and contributions, and wish him the best as he joins Mike Doremus and Innovative Rail Systems.

Rod Whitehead was appointed Supt. Diesel Locomotives. Rod recently graduated from New Jersey Institute of Technology with a degree in Engineering.  In his new capacity he will manage the railroad's fleet of nine diesel locomotives. Rod's grandfather founded the Black River & Western Railroad in 1961.

The Jack Frost made its inaugural run, launching the Black River & Western Railroad's first scheduled winter service in 38 years. The train operates Saturdays only, January through March.
